Approaching Pavonis Mons by UFO

So tonight is the Flaming Lips show at the Hollywood Bowl which is being filmed in HD for a future DVD release. Tonight is also rumored to be the first landing of the Flaming Lip's UFO, which Wayne Coyne ellaborated on in an interview with Rolling Stone earlier this year. Basically, a gigantic UFO will 'land' on the stage, deposit the band, and then act as a gigantic lights show throughout the set. If you're intrigued, then watch this footage of the test runs of this UFO that surfaced on YouTube a few days back. I think it looks rather impressive, even though this is clearly not a finished version of the spacecraft. If the UFO does appear tonight, I'll post some pictures here tomorrow.

Even if the UFO does not launch as planned, concert goers will be more than entertained by the costumed dancers who join the Lips onstage. Who are these mysterious people, who seem to have found a way onstage with their favorite band? Well, believe it or not they're regular concert goers who are recruited by the band prior to the show. Not only do these lucky fans get to make a fool of themselves in front of a live audience, they also revieve a free t-shirt for their troubles. Needless to say, my goal is to dance with the Lips on one of the occassion at which I see them this summer. That's just the kind of thing you want to be able to tell your grandchildren about...

EDIT: The UFO did not make a landing, and from what I've heard the Hollywood Bowl show ended up being kind of dull due to a front row VIP section who obviously were not fans. LA really is a crazy place...
